Printed on alkaline rag paper and bound sewn signatures in brown leather boards with gilt tooling and four raised bands on spine. The front cover has come completely away, and has been stripped of its paste down; the front free end paper… and half title page are also lost, tragically, as the intact back end papers are beautifully marbled. So, too, were the edges, once upon a time, but these are now age discolored and darkened to the point of being, effectively, erased. Otherwise, noticeable wear to cover, and the corners and bumped and worn. The title page, exposed by the loss of the end paper and half title, is creased / wrinkled, edge worn and soiled; a previous owner's name in ink at top of this page. Minor soiling, shelf wear, edge wear to cover. Binding is square and tight. The fore edge of p. 47-48 is torn away, the damage not touching the text block. All the pages to the middle of the book are effected by exposure to moisture, but the superior paper has stood up remarkably well, and apart from a few pages near on pp. 208-09, which seem to represent the epicentre of the moisture ingress, even remain bright. A few pages towards the beginning of the book are lightly marked / annoted in pencil.

Spine tight. ***iv prelim-pages plus four-page index to the first volume to the fore plus 711 text-pages including tables to rear. 210 x 146 mm. ***'At the commencement of a new year, and of what may be viewed as a new era in Agriculture, this Periodical is offered to public notice. ***While retracing the progress of husbandry, in order to justify the above assertion, we need not go further back than to the later years of the eighteenth century; for then it was that Sir John Sinclair by his exertions "led to the formation of the Board of Agriculture," of which he was the first president. Till that period, though the cultivation of the land was not neglected, and was in many instances carried on upon improved principles, by spirited individuals, it was marked by no trace of science. Early, however, in the present century, that eminent chemist Sir Humphry Davy, was invited to deliver courses of lectures before the Board of Agriculture; and these he published, under the title of "Elements of Agricultural Chemistry;" a work replete with sound and practical views of the subject. This most excellent work went through several revisals and new editions, and now remains a stock-book, justly appreciated for its science, and by no one more so than by Dr.Justus Liebig, the renowned chemist of Giesson. ***But Davy was in advance of his age. He was not appreciated by the sons of the soil, who continued to plod on, in the old empirical path of routine. ***in the mean time, population was increasing by rapid strides; the war had ceased, and every effort that practical husbandry could exert was tasked to furnish subsistence for the increasing millions. ***In 1839 the English Agricultural Society, formed upon the model of the Highland Society, held its first public exhibition in Oxford. Shortly after, the first part of its "Journal" was published, and from that time the agricultural press of England began to be the repository of admirable essays and communications, all tending to stimulate the most noble exertions, and by their intelligence to prove, beyond a doubt, that the art itself was destined, ere long, to assume its place among the sciences. ***The great work of Leibig was now announced, and created a wonderful sensation. The author himself came among us, and was received with acclamation. By some of his principles and views were assailed; but, with new editions of his work, some corrections were made, which by their frankness and candour, silenced objections, and exalted the name of the author. "The Royal Agricultural Journal" has subsequently become the repository of practical results, and of sound theoretic deductions.' The original intention was to make a coastal trip by sea, but it became clear early on in the venture that this was not practical, and most of the journey around the coast had to be made by road. The journey was completed in six separate trips, over the period 1813 to 1823. The final twist in the story of A Voyage Round Great Britain, was the discovery, in 1962, of 306 of the original 308 Daniell copper plates, the location of which had not been known for more than 100 years. Hogg, born in Selkirkshire had little formal education, worked as a shepherd, fortunately had access to books and began writing verse. He settled in Edinburgh where he began a promising literary career, finding friends in Walter Scott,…Byron, Wordsworth, Southey and the publisher John Murrary. Wordsworth's poem "Upon the Death of James Hogg" expressed respect and affection shared by many of his contemporaries. DNB p.984. "The spontaneity, freshness and energy of Hogg's verse are readily apparent. Armorial bookplate of Exam, text clean, rubbing to spine head and foot. The fourth volume of verse by William Tennant (1784-1848), scholar of oriental languages and later a professor at St Mary…'s College, St Andrews. It seems that this was intended to be just the first part of a longer poem, but its reception discouraged Tennant from continuing with the project: the subject is an obscure incident in 9th century Scottish history, although the title might lead one to assume a connexion with Macbeth. Tennant's principal poetic achievement was in fact his first work, Anster Fair, written in ottava rima and a mock epic: it seems to have created the form which Byron was to use to such great effect in Beppo and then in Don Juan. The present poem is in the same stanza form, but it does not appear to suit a serious poem as well as a comic one. Jackson, Annals of English Verse, p. 498.

The most ambitious British coastal picture book of its period, conceived as a systematic circuit of the shoreline from Land's End and carried forward county by county, combining Ayton's descriptive text with Daniell's sustained programme of aquatint views. The plates move between working harbours, headlands, cliff coasts, and sea approaches, and include repeated attention to the visual drama of exposed rock, surf, and weather, alongside shipping and the maritime life of towns and coves. Although the project proposed a coastal voyage, the journey necessarily alternated between sea and land travel, a practical reality that sharpened the book's mixture of marine prospects and overland viewpoints. William Daniell was both the draughtsman and engraver of the plates and one of the leading British practitioners of aquatint. Trained in London, Daniell had earlier travelled widely and achieved prominence through large illustrated projects that demonstrated the medium's capacity for tonal range and atmosphere, and A Voyage round Great Britain became his major late work, extending aquatint's topographical possibilities over a sustained national subject. Richard Ayton supplied the letterpress and shaped the work's documentary ambition, describing the coast not only as scenery but as an inhabited and worked environment, where fishing, trade, and coastal travel defined local life. Provenance: Christopher Turner was a Lincolnshire landowner and Conservative Member of Parliament associated with the Stoke Rochford estate. Hermann Marx was a German-born British stockbroker, banker, and a noted print and book collector. Part of his distinguished library was sold at auction by Sotheby's in April 1948.
