Hardcover. 175 pp. Illustrated with vintage black and white and contemporary color photos. Based on the true story of the 28th Division's compassion and heroism in WWI Europe. The soldiers of the unit, q…uartered in the town of Wiltz, Luxembourg, donated their gifts from home, their cooks baked sweets, and borrowed clothes from a local priest. Corporal Richard Brookins rode through town as St. Nicholas on Dec. 5th, 1944. Before the war ended the town was destroyed by bombing but the story did not end there. In 1977, the mayor of Wiltz located Brookins and , telling him that the people there had never forgotten him and that their children and grandchildren wanted to know who the "American St. Nick" was. The old soldier returned to the town and recreated his ride through town dressed as St. Nicholas. Brookins died in 2018.
