Hardcover. Etat : Good. This is the 1923 hardcover reprint of "Die Troerninnen - Nach Der Tragödie des Euripedes. The book ("The Trojans" in English) was published in Munich, Germany. To English readers Franz Werfel (1890 - 1945), an Austrian-Bohemian novelist, playwright, and poet, is mostly remembered for two novels, "The Song of Bernadette" and "The Forty Days of Musa Dagh". The first dealt with the life of St. Bernadette who had claimed to have 18 visions of the Virgin Mary. The latter shone a needed spotlight on the genocide of Armenians committed by the Ottoman government. Werfel and his wife barely escaped with their lives from the Nazis, who burned his books. The Werfels were able to find safe refuge in the United States. Presented here is Werfel's translation of Euripides tragedy, "The Trojans". This is the 1923 reprint issued by the original publisher, Kurt Wolff. It is a handsome book, bound with a white cloth spine and paper-covered boards. The type face used for the text is nicely large and easily read. It is in a modern font, rather than the old German Black-letter. This copy has a small, but unfortunate gouge near the top edge of the front cover. TITLE : Die Troerinnen - Nach der Tragödies des Eurpides AUTHOR : Franz Werfel (Franz Viktor Werfel, 1890 - 1945) IMPRINT : Kurt Wolff PLACE : Munich, Germany DATE : 1923 - Fifth Printing LANGUAGE : German STATUS : Hardcover OP PHYSICAL DETAILS : German Trade Hardcover; 134 pages; 6" x 9", quarter-bound, white cloth-covered spine with purplish-brown paper-covered boards. Black decorative bands and lettering on spine; black lettering and decorative border on front ; black decorative border on rear. CONDITION -- GOOD PLUS ONLY -- This is a previously owned book that remains clean and presentable, with the following particulars and imperfections noted :: EXTERIOR : Weathering (or foxy spotting) along joints; spine displays brightly; fading to paper along top edge of front boards (about 1 3/4"); the same to rear board ( slightly less wide); surface rub to boards is moderate - there is a small, vague damp stain on the front board (we've marked this in one of our pictures). The most obvious imperfection is the presence of a small gouge on the bottom edge of the border at the top of the front board (we've also pointed this out in the same picture - hence the condition grade). The board edges display modest wear - the bottom edges display a minute amount of shelf rub. Else the exterior is clean. BINDING : Solid - tight. No leaves are detached or loose. The boards have taken on a slight curve or splay - This shows at the head of the spine also, which has slightly widened. INTERIOR : There is a penciled signature at the top of the front free end-paper, dated 1927. The signature is (to me) illegible. Placed inside the front cover was a business card - which we have left in place (shown in a picture) The card was that of Gertrud Kunstmann of Hamburg (Werkstatt Eleganter Damenhüte is printed under her name) She was a milliner - a women's hat maker. Published in Germany in 1923, this book managed to avoid the Nazi book-burning.…

Soft cover. Etat : Good. 2nd Edition. Carl Sternheim (born William Adolph Carl Francke) was an important German playwright and short story writer, who is, unfortunately, little known to American readers. He was one of the most renowned figures in the German Expressionist movement. His works were prized for their keen satire on the moral foibles of the German middle class of the Wilhelmine era. In 1908 he joined with Franz Blei to help found the Expressionist journal "Hyperion". This journal published the first prose works by Franz Kafka. Sternheim later presented the Fontane Prize to Kafka in 1915. Kafka was still largely unknown as a writer. Ottomar Starke, who did the art for this edition of "Schuhlin", also drew the first cover (in 1915) for Kafka's "The Metamorphosis". Carl Sternheim's works were banned by the Nazi government because of his satiric take on the German bourgeoisie, and because he was of Jewish descent (His father was a jew and his mother was Lutheran). He left Germany for Brussels, where he died in 1942. "Schuhlin" is a short 'narrative' (as the title has it) of a man's struggle with music, his development, the impediments placed in his way, and his accomplishments (There is likely more to the work than my brief take). I do not think the work has ever been translated into English. This copy of "Schuhlin" was issued in a paperback format having an attached dust-jacket with flaps. It was issued by Kurt Wolff in Leipzig in that publisher's "Der Jungste Tag Series". "Schuhlin" was No. 21 in the series. The front cover has a lovely crayon lithograph by Ottomar Starke of a man playing a piano. The rear cover has the publisher's promotional text for a work by Franz Blei. The flaps of the cover present the publisher's list for the series. SERIES : Der Jüngste Tag (no. 21) TITLE : Schuhlin, Eine Erzählung AUTHOR : Carl Sternheim (William Adolph Carl Francke, 1878 - 1942) IMPRINT : Kurt Wolff PLACE : Leipzig DATE : 1916 EDITION : Likely Second Paperback Edition STATUS : OP SPECIAL ATTRIBUTES : Handsome Crayon Lithograph Art on front cover by Ottomar Starke, the artist who first illustrated a cover for Kafka's "The Metamorphosis". In a letter to his publisher in 1915, Kafka pleaded that he did not want an insect on the cover. He was adamant. ("The insect itself cannot be drawn.") Starke wisely acquiesced to Kafka's desire, and his cover for "The Metamorphosis" is in a very similar style as his cover illustration for Sternheim's "Schuhlin". STATUS : OP PHYSICAL DETAILS : Trade paperback with attached pictorial wraps, sewn and glued (plain, thin cardboard cover which has a dust-jacket with flaps - the whole attached at the spine); publisher's device on title page; 32 pages (pagination includes title page); approximately 5 3/8" x 8 1/2". CONDITION -- NEAR VERY GOOD -- EXTERIOR : Paper is unavoidably darkened and weathered (most noticeably on rear) ; there is scattered spotting and smudging - edge wear includes small nicking and creasing - corner tips are bumped. There is abrasion to the spine extremities and small loss to the head. All the same, the whole displays nicely. BINDING : There is evidence that mending has been effected to the cover attachment - however the whole seems solid enough and no leaves are detached or loose. INTERIOR : The paper is unavoidably toned throughout (This book was issued during World War I, so the publisher had to work with the materials he could obtain) I spotted a few small check-marks in the margins next to text - these are small and neat and not egregious. Else the interior is clean and presentable. Cover Art by Ottomar Starke (illustrateur).…

Hardcover. Etat : Good. 1st Edition. In German. First Printing of the Kurt Wolff edition ( 'Jüngstes bis neuntes tausend' ). The novel was originally published in 1903 by Albert Langen. Diana was the first novel of the Goddesses, the three novels of the Duchess Von Assy (Die Göttinnen der drei Romane der Herzogin von Assy). You can see the covers in the photos. They are mostly clean, just a few little spots. There is some toning at the margins. The spine is also toned. The black lettering on both the front and spine is nicely bright. So is the red design on the front. There is a little wear at the spine ends, light rubbing and a few tears at the junctures there. The spine has a moderate forward lean, but the book is solidly bound from cover to cover. There are no cracks or spaces between any of the facing pages. There is one very thin space at the juncture between the front cover and the front end paper, going down just an inch and a half or so off the top edge. Both the front and rear covers are very tightly bound. The cover edges have a few mild dents, no rubbing, no rub-through. There are thin creases below the two top corners, one above the front bottom corner. There isn't any rubbing or rub-through at any the corners. The pages are exceptionally clean. I saw only a couple of little spots of soiling. The pages are toned, but uniformly. There is some very mild creasing, not much. There are no markings in the book. No attachments of any kind. And no one has written their name or anything else anywhere. 'Luiz Heinrich Mann, best known as simply Heinrich Mann, was a German writer known for his socio-political novels. From 1930 until 1933, he was president of the fine poetry division of the Prussian Academy of Arts. His fierce criticism of the growing Fascism and Nazism forced him to flee Germany after the Nazis came to power during 1933. He was the elder brother of writer Thomas Mann. Mann's essay on Émile Zola and the novel Der Untertan earned him much respect during the Weimar Republic, since they satirized Imperial German society. Later, in 1930, his book Professor Unrat was freely adapted into the movie Der Blaue Engel (The Blue Angel). Carl Zuckmayer wrote the script, and Josef von Sternberg was the director. Mann wanted his paramour, the actress Trude Hesterberg, to play the main female part as the actress Lola Lola (named Rosa Fröhlich in the novel), but Marlene Dietrich was given the part, her first sound role. Together with Albert Einstein and other celebrities during 1932, Mann was a signatory to the Urgent Call for Unity, asking the voters to reject the Nazis. Einstein and Mann had previously co-authored a letter during 1931 condemning the murder of Croatian scholar Milan Šufflay. The Nazis burnt Heinrich Mann's books as 'contrary to the German spirit' during the infamous book burning of May 10, 1933, which was instigated by the then Nazi propaganda minister Joseph Goebbels.'.…
