They provide an overview of the work of the author and the late Chih-Han Sah on various aspects of Hilbert's Third Problem: Are two Euclidean polyhedra with the same volume ¿scissors-congruent¿, i.e. can they be subdivided into finitely many pairwise congruent pieces The book starts from the classical solution of this problem by M Dehn. But generalization to higher dimensions and other geometries quickly leads to a great variety of mathematical topics, such as homology of groups, algebraic K-theory, characteristic classes for flat bundles, and invariants for hyperbolic manifolds. Some of the material, particularly in the chapters on projective configurations, is published here for the first time.

Ajouter au panierTaschenbuch. Etat : Neu. Neuware - Clinical biochemistry is an analytical and interpretative science. The analytical part involves the determination of the level of chemical components in body fluids and tissues. The interpretative part examines these results and uses them in the diagnosis of disease, the screening for susceptibility to specific diseases, and the monitoring of the progress of treatment. This book is designed to cover the major techniques and analytical instruments used in clinical biochemistry. Each chapter of this book is based on a specific technique, or techniques, with associated instrumentation. These are discussed in some detail. A historical introduction is included for most of the techniques, and the current uses of the techniques are presented. Following that is a series of practical exercises. The first exercises in most of the chapters are a general introduction to the technique, leading to those with a clinical bias. Where applicable, the clinical practical exercises are associated with a case history and/or the discussion of the relevance of the assay to diagnosis and prognosis and to the monitoring of recovery. Each chapter concludes with a selection of appropriate references.

The usual textbooks on statistical mechanics start with the microensemble but rather quickly switch to the canonical ensemble introduced by Gibbs. This has the main advantage of easier analytical calculations, but there is a price to pay ¿ for example, phase transitions can only be defined in the thermodynamic limit of infinite system size. The question how phase transitions show up from systems with, say, 100 particles with an increasing number towards the bulk can only be answered when one finds a way to define and classify phase transitions in small systems. This is all possible within Boltzmann's original definition of the microcanonical ensemble.Starting from Boltzmann's formula, the book formulates the microcanonical thermodynamics entirely within the frame of mechanics. This way the thermodynamic limit is avoided and the formalism applies to small as well to other nonextensive systems like gravitational ones. Phase transitions of first order, continuous transitions, critical lines and multicritical points can be unambiguously defined by the curvature of the entropy S(E,N). Special attention is given to the fragmentation of nuclei and atomic clusters as a peculiar phase transition of small systems controlled, among others, by angular momentum. The dependence of the liquid-gas transition of small atomic clusters under prescribed pressure is treated. Thus the analogue to the bulk transition can be studied. The book also describes the microcanonical statistics of the collapse of a self-gravitating system under large angular momentum.

Neuware - This invaluable text has been developed to provide students with more background on the applications of electricity and magnetism, particularly with those topics which relate to current research. For example, waveguides (both metal and dielectric) are discussed more thoroughly than in most texts because they are an important laboratory tool and important components of modern communications. In a sense, this book modernizes the topics covered in the typical course on electricity and magnetism. It provides not only solid background for the student who chooses a field which uses techniques requiring knowledge of electricity and magnetism, but also general background for the physics major.
