On title page is an inscription in Russian by the censor with the year, 1838. There is also the rubber stamp impression of The Rabbi of Chelmnik, but he did not write or sign his name. And since there is no date, we don't know which one it was. It might be: Avraham Dov Auerbach of Khmelnik (died 1801) or: Abraham Dov Baer of Ovruch (died 1840), rabbi and hassidic leader in the Ukraine. He succeeded his father as the Rabbi of Khmelnik. He subsequently became Rabbi of Ovruch and Zhitomor. He was a devoted disciple of Hahum of Chernobyl. Abraham Dov went to Eretz Israel in 1831, settleing in Safed where he became leader of the Hasidim. He wrote: Bat Avin. Jerusalem 1847. [Encyc. Judaica volume 1, page 311]. Khmelnik is located in Podolia region of the modern Ukraine, and Jews have settled there in 16th century during the colonization of the Ukrainian stepps. Town name is indeed popular since the word Khmel (Chmiel) is a hop in English. Khmelnik location is at 4933 2758, which places it about 130 miles from Kiev and 590 miles from Moscow.
