Back in the late seventies, before Diana, before Balmoral photospreads, before streaming TV documentaries about ?the Firm,? Reginald Davis produced this glossy yet curiously square portrait of Charles, Prince of Wales. Davis?who h…ad a knack for photographing and writing about royals as though they were both human and curiously zoological?presents the young heir as a dashing, polo-thwacking, naval-uniform-wearing chap destined for Great Things. It?s a time capsule of the man before he became the man who would be king but not quite yet. Between its pages you?ll find photographic spreads of Charles shaking hands, smiling gamely, standing near Welsh mountains, and generally doing the kind of things that require capital letters in captions. The seventies hair alone is worth the price of admission. Davis writes with the kind of reverence that suggests the subject once lent him a horse, or at least waved from across a lawn. Condition: Good ?which, in Crappy Old Books parlance, means the cover is intact, the pages are all present and not welded together by an unfortunate tea spill, and the spine still behaves like a spine. Expect the dust jacket (if present at all) to have done a bit of light sunbathing in someone?s conservatory. Pages may carry a faint whiff of cigarette smoke and Crown Derby biscuit tin storage. But it holds together, much like the monarchy itself, and that?s good enough for us. If you?re into royal memorabilia, retro coffee-table fare, or simply enjoy the slightly awkward charm of a young Charles immortalised in earnest print before a thousand tabloid front pages reshaped the narrative, this book is a minor gem. As a bonus, it can also be used as a handy talking point, a leveller for wobbly furniture, or the beginning of a conversation about how the seventies really did have their own colour palette. A perfect example of what Crappy Old Books does best: serving up yesterday?s tomes with today?s slightly raised eyebrow.
