([16.5cm x 23.5cm] approx. 141 pp. Mid blue cloth with gilt titles to the spine. Brown dust wrapper unclipped at 25s with red titles to the front wrap and spine. Book and jacket are in fine condition. The author was secretary of the Committee set up in 1955 which examined the existing law of obscene libel, recommended reform and drafted the Bill which became law as the Obscene Publications Act in 1959. He is therefore well qualified to write about the operation - and the shortcomings - of the statute. He does not support the lobby which would abolish all censorship; yet he believes very firmly that the courts are not the ideal arbiters of English literature and hopes that the law's present attitude to publishing will be changed. Since this isn't likely to happen in the near future, he considers that we should face the tortuous logic of the present statute and try to make it work better. The foreword is by John Mortimer who was one of the defence barristers in the' Lady Chatterley's Lover' case. The dust jacket will be protected with a new inert archival quality sleeve which is removable. Please contact us if you would like any more information or additional images. Andre Deutsch, London. 1969 First edition ISBN 0233959017 144pp Hardback. When an expert writes on the law it is unusual for the layman to be able to enjoy it. This time he can, because C.H. Rolph's account of the shaping of the laws, which relate to the publishing of books is witty, humane and without condescension. This book also has the benefit of a long foreword by John Mortimer who was probably the most famous defence lawyer in many celebrated obscenity trials. This copy is in FINE condition in a FINE unclipped dustwrapper. Ref L4.
