This book brings to light the political writings and diplomatic achievements of John Adams, the 'second President of the United States, who not only helped negotiate the Treaty of Paris with Great Britain in 1783, formally ending the American Revolutionary War, but also successfully negotiated the first treaty between the United States and the Netherlands in 1782. The book follows Adams throughout his career, examining the ideas and strategies he employed as a diplomat. The author presents Adams's main arguments for independence, his critiques of the British government, and his vision for a new American republic, exploring the ways in which his commitment to individual liberty intersected with his belief in the importance of national sovereignty.
