This book presents the trial of Francis Burke, a man indicted for manslaughter for administering Thomsonian treatments that resulted in the death of one Benjamin Hazelip. The treatments, popular at the time for cholera, consisted of excessive sweating and doses of various herbs. The author provides a detailed account of the trial, including witness testimonies and arguments from both the prosecution and defense. The trial sheds light on the differing medical practices of the time, highlighting the tension between traditional and alternative medicine. The author delves into the historical context of Thomsonianism, a form of herbal medicine that challenged the established medical practices of the early 19th century. Through the lens of this trial, the book offers insights into the evolving understanding of health, disease, and the role of medical practitioners in society.
