This book explores the entangled history between Portugal and England, spanning the 16th century to the 20th century, to explore the political and economic subterfuge employed to maintain an imperialistic stranglehold over the Portuguese people. At its heart is a profound dive into the 1904 Methuen Treaty, an agreement designed to grant favorable trade terms to England that ultimately reduced Portugal to little more than a vassal state. By drawing upon a trove of archival material, including communiques, state papers, and personal letters, the author illuminates the motivations of key historical figures and exposes the lengths to which England was willing to exploit Portugal for its own gain, paving the way to Portugal's eventual role as an unwilling ally of England in World War I.
