It sheds light on 18th century theater and the trials women of meager means and dependent professions such as actresses, faced in the 18th century. Bellamy takes a thoughtful, honest, and self-aware approach in discussing the challenges she faced as a single mother in a time when women had few rights, and her unvarnished narrative humanizes the circumstances of her life with which many ambitious working women will still identify with today.
