This book explores the question of whether the removal of a famous triptych and religious treasure from the Low Countries by the Austrian government in the 18th century was a violation of the rights of the Belgian people. The book delves into the historical context of the era, examining the complex political and legal landscape of the time. The author analyzes primary documents, including diplomatic correspondence and legal opinions, to shed light on the motivations and justifications for the seizure of these cultural artifacts. The book raises questions about the nature of ownership, the role of the state in preserving cultural heritage, and the relationship between art and national identity. Ultimately, it offers a nuanced understanding of the historical events and their significance for our understanding of the relationship between art, politics, and the law.
