This book examines winding ropes, safety catches, and appliances in mine shafts, presenting the findings of a commission appointed in 1905 to investigate safety in South African mining operations. The commission's report includes evidence from manufacturers, engineers, and miners, exploring safety concerns and technological limitations, with insights from historical precedents, such as the impact of safety catches on mining fatalities in Britain. The book delves into the deterioration of winding ropes, preservation techniques, and the influence of working conditions on their lifespan, drawing on data from hundreds of mines to illustrate the challenges faced. The author explores the competing interests of safety and productivity, and the measures implemented to mitigate risks, ultimately emphasizing the importance of ongoing innovation and collaboration to enhance safety in mining operations.
