A focal point is the transition from rule under a central military figure to a departmental system, ultimately leading to an insurrection in 1837. The author draws on primary sources from the era, including local ordinances, military records, and personal correspondence, to provide a multifaceted picture of life in this region during the mid-1800s. The text examines New Mexico's economic, social, and political landscapes, with special attention paid to the tensions between the ruling class and the general populace. The author argues that the insurrection was the culmination of long-simmering discontent among the people, who were struggling to survive amid rampant corruption and a lack of support from the central government. This book will appeal to scholars of history and anyone interested in the development of the American Southwest.
