A Note from Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Footnotes. Illustrations. Red dot on bottom edge. The dust jacket has some wear, tears and soiling. "Transmitted from beyond the grave, here is the long-suppressed chronicle of Conan Doyle's 1917 espionage mission into wartime Germany to track down an awesome new weapon designed to destroy England and end World War I with a German victory." Robert Saffron (1918-1985) was a US journalist, television screenwriter and author of The Demon Device: A Novel by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle as Communicated to Robert Saffron (1979), a speculative Alternate History set in World War One, with Arthur Conan Doyle sent off by his government to destroy a German secret Weapon; he is successful. Derived from a Kirkus review: Arthur Conan Doyle at age 58 makes a highly unlikely James Bond in this hardworking WW I caper--supposedly narrated by dead Doyle from the Beyond. British Intelligence asks Doyle to ascertain the truth about some sort of rumored German super-weapon located somewhere in enemy territory. Off to Europe goes A.C.D.--teaching billiards to Albert Einstein (who gives some reluctant technical advice), meeting characters from Maugham's Ashenden, comparing notes with expatriate rebel Lenin, acquiring a Leninist femme fatale sidekick, disguising himself as a German laborer and a priest, rescuing the sidekick from prison, and discovering an atom bomb headed for Big Ben. Oh, yes--also some African psychic stuff, with historical footnotes. Another review on-line extolls In "The Demon Device," a gripping tale unfolds as a brilliant but troubled inventor creates a machine capable of harnessing dark, supernatural forces. As the device's power grows, it begins to corrupt those around it, leading to chaos and destruction. The inventor, grappling with his own demons, must confront the consequences of his creation and find a way to stop the malevolent energy before it consumes everything he holds dear. The story explores themes of ambition, morality, and the fine line between genius and madness.
