Paperback. Etat : Good. Some books ask simple questions. Others ask questions of breathtaking ambition, such as: How did human beings become clever enough to ask questions like this in the first place? Thought in a Hostile World is very much in the second category. It is an intellectual expedition into the origins of the human mind, where the scenery consists of prehistoric landscapes, evolutionary puzzles and a great many remarkably ingenious ancestors trying very hard not to become somebody else?s lunch. Published by Blackwell Publishing in 2003, Kim Sterelny?s acclaimed work explores the evolution of human cognition with a refreshingly broad perspective. Rather than imagining intelligence as something that simply appeared because larger brains happened to be fashionable, Sterelny argues that our remarkable mental abilities evolved in response to the demanding, unpredictable and often thoroughly inconvenient environments our ancestors inhabited. The "hostile world" of the title is not merely one populated by predators, harsh climates and uncertain food supplies. It is also socially complex, requiring cooperation, planning, communication and an ever-expanding capacity to learn from others. Intelligence, in Sterelny?s view, did not evolve in splendid isolation. It evolved because surviving alone was generally an extremely poor long-term strategy. One of the delights of the book is that it refuses to settle for easy answers. Instead of presenting evolution as a tidy sequence of inevitable improvements, Sterelny reveals it as a messy process involving changing environments, cumulative culture, technological innovation and social learning. Human cognition emerges not from a single magical breakthrough but from countless small adaptations building upon one another over immense stretches of time. There is something wonderfully ironic about reading such a sophisticated account of human intelligence while occasionally having to reread a paragraph because your own highly evolved brain wandered off to wonder what you were having for dinner. The mind is an extraordinary achievement of natural selection. It is also remarkably fond of distraction. This is serious scholarship, but it wears its learning lightly. Sterelny writes with clarity and precision, drawing together insights from evolutionary biology, anthropology, archaeology, psychology and philosophy into an argument that feels coherent rather than overwhelming. The result is a book that rewards careful reading without demanding a second doctorate before Chapter Three. Reading it today is particularly rewarding. Questions about intelligence, cooperation, culture and learning have only become more relevant in an age of artificial intelligence, global communication and rapidly evolving technology. Although written over twenty years ago, many of Sterelny?s central themes feel remarkably contemporary. The book reminds us that understanding where human cognition came from may help us understand where it is heading. Our copy is in good condition and appears to have been read remarkably little. The pages are clean, the binding is excellent, and it has all the hallmarks of a volume that spent considerably more time residing on an academic bookshelf than being wrestled through seminars. There is an old crease across the back cover together with a slight curve to some of the pages, as though at some point in its history someone briefly sat on it before realising that evolutionary psychology is generally more comfortable to read than to use as a cushion. Thankfully, neither issue affects its structural integrity or readability. There is a pleasing symmetry in the fact that a book devoted to the evolution of human thought has itself survived the hazards of modern existence with little more than a cosmetic wrinkle or two. After all, if cognition can emerge from millions of years of environmental adversity, a slightly creased back cover scarcely qualifies as a major selective pressure. Whether your interests lie in evolution, philosophy of mind, anthropology, cognitive science or simply books that tackle enormous questions with intelligence and restraint, Thought in a Hostile World remains an absorbing and highly regarded contribution to the field. It challenges assumptions without becoming dogmatic, explains complexity without oversimplifying it, and leaves readers with a renewed appreciation for the astonishing biological machinery quietly operating behind their own eyes. Exactly the sort of thoughtful academic volume that Crappy Old Books delights in giving a second life. It may have acquired a crease and the faintest hint of having once been sat upon, but then again, so have many of the people who will most enjoy reading it.…
