Norfolk is a very small beautiful island which is closer to Noumea, to Fuji and New Zealand than to Sydney, but is nevertheless a territory under the authority of Australia. It shares with Sydney the first history of European settlement of in the South Pacific. Nor has the charm of lonely island together with shops full of treasure from around the world. You can holiday there simply - walking, fishing, snorkelling, diving, swimming, bird watching - or you can live and dine in luxury - but the only high rise building are in historic convict Kingston. Hospitality is friendly and on a human scale. Descendants of the Pitcairns, who settled Norfolk in 1856, still speak among themselves their own lilting combination of Tahitian and country English.
