Hardcover. First edition (& 1st printing). SF novel. Robert Hale produced books primarily for the library market (still flourishing in the 1970s) and so most titles are very uncommon. The only edition of this title. ''Hungarian-born author, who may have changed or modified his name after coming to the UK in 1957. He began publishing sf with ''The Craving for Blackness'' in New Worlds for September 1962, set in a world where only women can go into space. His sf novels, bleak but otherwise unexceptional, are No Stars for Us (1964), The Seedy (1969) - whose titular protagonist is a fertile exception to near-universal sterility caused by a planetary disaster, in this case atmospheric nuclear testing - and METAMORPHOSIS (1976). This author should not be confused with Robert Ray, a pseudonym used by Al Bernstein for a single story in 1950. Robert Hale was a UK publishing firm which from 1936 - 1984, though mainly in the 1970s, published more than 450 sf novels, in hardbound editions, primarily for the library market. A large majority of titles originating with the firm were uniform in length (192 pages) and routine in substance, most being Space Operas varied with occasional Dystopias, though other forms of sf also featured'' (John Clute & David Langford/Encyclopedia of SF, 3rd Edition). Page edges spotted, and splash stain along top of fore-edge, faint spotting to free endpapers, a near fine copy in a VG dustjacket with splash stain to part of rear (white) cover.
