Illustrated throughout with numerous color and black and white photographs and diagrams of industrial design objects and mechanisms. In good condition with very good translucent printed paper wraps. Covers have light bumping to edges and corners with mild surface wear and handling marks; visible tape residue to top and bottom edges and faint discoloration to front and rear covers from former library coverings. Library stamp present on title page and circular blind stamp on p 13; card pocket affixed to inside rear cover. Binding firm; previous owner's name, date and "used" written in ink on half-title page; interior pages otherwise clean and unmarked. [From Introduction p 7] This is the first general introduction to collapsibles - objects that, in one way or another, fold out for action and fold up for storage. "Collapsible" used as a noun is a neologism. This book is the first to use the word to refer to any object that is in some way collapsible, rather than to describe it in terms of that quality. Sometimes you need the word first before you can think about a thing in depth. The prime purpose of this book is to discuss a subject never thoroughly explored before. But beyond that, the aim is to inspire designers to create space-saving objects of great elegance and functionality. Mies van der Rohe's "less is more" and Dieter Rams's "less is better" have never been so true as they are today. The selection of objects illustrated in Collapsible is heavily biased towards ingenuity. Brilliant solutions have shamelessly been given priority over the satisfaction of commonplace needs, with no attempt at completeness. Collapsible is not a manual but an album for inspiration. Contents include: Introduction: A strategy for survival; Fold it: A category is born; Space saving; Change, mother of invention; Nature's own method; The function of collapsibility; The nons and the quasis; Mechanics: Classifying collapsibility; Stress; Folding; Creasing; Bellows; Assembling; Hinging; Rolling; Sliding; Nesting; Inflation; Fanning; Concertina; Furniture: Mobile functionality; Stools; Chairs; Beds, sofabeds and sofas; Tables; Storage furniture; Sources: Bibliography; Sources of photos; Index.

This is the first general introduction to collapsibles -- objects that, in one way or another, fold out for action and fold up for storage. Collapsibility is an elementary design principle applied to a great many everyday objects, from telescopes to umbrellas, newspapers to Venetian blinds, furniture to perambulators. Collapsibles work by adjustment, which is a basic strategy for survival. This book also aims to inspire designers to create space-saving objects of great elegance & functionality. Illustrated with hundreds of color photos and graphics that show a wide variety of ingenious collapsible objects. As new, in original pictorial wraps, as issued without dust jacket.
