Studs Terkel's Hard Times paints a picture of the spirit of shame and defeat and hopelessness- the sense of failure - created in men by these times. Frederick Manfred's Elof Lofblom is a young man who has looked for a place in this world without finding one, and he has come back to the home place, come back not defeated but needing to lick his wounds and gain strength before returning to the struggle.
