Flynn's 1945 pamphlet ~THE FINAL SECRET OF PEARL HARBOR (second edition revised). (scarce item). world history. world war ii. american history. imperial japan. covert operations. espionage. conspiracy theory. ~Franklin Roosevelt proclaimed December 7, 1941, "a day that will live in infamy"~and promptly set out to make scapegoats of our commanders in Hawaii, Adm. Husband E. Kimmel and Lt. Gen. Walter C. Short. Kimmel refused to take this lying down, and his efforts to defend himself caused FDR to slam down the "national security" curtain. (No, Virginia, it didn't start with Watergate.) Well, what really happened? Did FDR maneuver us into war? Did Washington know the attack was coming? Was any serious effort made to alert Kimmel and Short? The full story has never come out. Historian Bruce Bartlett doesn't pretend to know all the answers. But he has unearthed facts long buried in the National Archives and elsewhere . poured over the private papers of the principals, even interviewed many of them, or members of their families . focused on the often ugly efforts of Roosevelt and, his cronies to suppress the facts. The result? Not the complete picture; the author believes we may never know that. But Bruce Bartlett performs four major services: (a) he plugs up many of the gaps, (b ) he shows us the gaps that still exist, ( c) he unearths John T. Flynn's The Final Secret of Pearl Harbor, the 1945 pamphlet that did more than anything to force the Democrats to hold hearings, however partisan ( the complete pamphlet, a major historical document in its own right, is reprinted in facsimile), and ( d) he considers the Pearl Harbor episode in the context of the tumultuous decades that followed, raising some very disturbing questions about the course of American foreign policy both before and after the war. Those who have probed the mysteries of Pearl Harbor often have given short shrift to the latter issue. Not Mr. Bartlett. He argues that the seeds of the Communist threat, the Cold War, Korea, Viet~nam, Watergate, and the attendant upheavals in American life were sown by Franklin D. Roosevelt, our first "Imperial President." For years the "court historians" and the media have sought to whitewash Roosevelt's pivotal contribution to the foreign policy that has brought us to where we are today, confused about our role in the world and, perhaps, on the brink of disaster. This important work penetrates the historical blackout. How will those who have lavished so much attention on Nixon's cover~up deal with this challenge to their own?
