The book is a detailed study of the handwriting of the mentally ill, and it explores the connection between the state of mind of an individual and the way they write. Bacon was a physician who specialized in mental health, and he believed that analyzing the handwriting of the insane could provide valuable insights into their condition. The book is divided into several chapters, each of which focuses on a specific aspect of the topic. Bacon begins by discussing the history of the study of handwriting and its use in diagnosing mental illness. He then goes on to describe the different types of handwriting that are commonly seen in the mentally ill, such as the ''spasmodic'' or ''tremulous'' style. Bacon also provides numerous examples of the handwriting of patients he has treated, along with detailed analyses of what their writing reveals about their mental state. He argues that studying the handwriting of the insane can help doctors better understand their patients and develop more effective treatments. Overall, On The Writing Of The Insane is a fascinating and groundbreaking work that sheds light on the connection between handwriting and mental illness.
