This book examines the evolution of the idea of "Protestant" in the context of European history, tracing the roots of Protestant beliefs back to Reformation ideas and contrasting these with the Catholic Church's perspective. The author argues that 'Protestantism' is a label that was applied to a group of reformers and dissenters whose beliefs differed from the established Catholic Church of the day. Moreover, 'Protestant' has acquired a range of negative connotations that do not accurately reflect its original meaning. Protestantism and Catholicism are shown as having co-existed in an evolving way rather than as separate entities. This thought-provoking work challenges some common assumptions about the Reformation through an exploration of the historical, political, and literary roots of the idea of the 'Protestant'. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format.
