Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book presents a series of experiments on the action of saline purgatives, or laxatives. The author begins by describing the normal movements and secretion of the intestines. He then examines the effects of the purgatives when injected subcutaneously or intravenously, and when applied locally to the peritoneal surfaces of the intestine. The author finds that saline purgatives increase the peristaltic movements of the intestine, and also cause an increased secretion of fluid into the intestine. These effects can be inhibited by the administration of calcium or magnesium chloride. The author concludes that the saline purgatives act by stimulating the muscles and glands of the intestine, and that this action is not dependent on the absorption of the salts into the blood. This book provides a valuable contribution to our understanding of the effects of purgatives on the intestine.
