The author describes the presence of many pre-historic stone structures, cairns, and burial mounds found in the Deccan. It is an academic book, repl…ete with hitherto unknown details of these relating to funeral locations. The book is divided geographically, and offers historical accounts of locations in Jiwarji (near Ferozabad), Shorapur, Rajan-Kollur, Mandewalli, Ijeri, etc. There is an article which analyses the skulls, the artifacts, pottery and implements found at the sites. It contains about 18 plates that give sketches of the locations, ground plans, sections, pottery, etc., to make it worth readable. About the Author :-Colonel Philip Meadows Taylor was an administrator in British India and a novelist, made notable contributions to public knowledge of South India. Though largely self-taught, he was a polymath, working alternately as a judge, engineer, artist, and man of letters. At the age of 15, he was sent out to India to become a clerk to a Bombay merchant. He was speedily transferred from military duty to a civil appointment, and in this capacity acquired a proficient knowledge of the languages and the people of southern India.Meanwhile, Taylor studied the laws, geology and the antiquities of the country and became an early expert on megaliths.
