It does not caricature its opponents. David Hume, Bertrand Russell, J. L. Mackie, Bart Ehrman, Richard Dawkins, and the other skeptical voices that appear across these thirty chapters are cited because their arguments are genuinely formidable, not because they are easy targets. A defense of the faith that only defeats weak objections has not defended much of anything.The method of each chapter is the same one used in the shorter first edition, simply given more room to breathe. First, the skeptical case is stated as strongly and fairly as space allows, in the reasoning of its best defenders. Second, the philosophical, biblical, historical, or scientific response is developed at length - not as a rhetorical trick to end the conversation, but as a genuine argument that can be weighed on its own merits, with its own remaining difficulties honestly noted. Third, each chapter closes by asking what difference the answer actually makes to a human life, because apologetics that never touches the heart has missed half the point of the exercise.I do not expect this book to convert anyone by force of syllogism alone. Nobody has ever been reasoned into love, and the Christian claim is ultimately a claim about a person, not merely a proposition. But I do believe, and this book is written from that belief, that the Christian faith has nothing to fear from thirty chapters of honest questions. The God who spoke the universe into being is not threatened by a graduate seminar, a laboratory, or a long night of doubt. He is, this book will argue at considerable length, the God who answers.
