Very well preserved, fresh copy of this first complete and correct translation of the original text by D.A.F. de Sade. One of the most controversial books ever written. Rare. The 120 Days of Sodom is Sade's masterpiece. A still unsurpassed catalogue of sexual abberrations and the first systematic exploration of the psychopathology of sex, it was written during Sade's imprisonment and then lost after the storming of the Bastille in 1789. Later rediscovered , the manuscript remained unpublished till an incomplete and not correct version was published in 1904 by the German psychiatrist Iwan Bloch under the pseudonym of Eugene Dühren. In 1929 Maurice Heine went to Germany to buy the text fot Viscount Charles de Nouilles. From 1931 till 1935 he published this text as the first real edition in a masterful and autorative way.

Iwan Bloch hatte zu Anfang des Jahrhunderts das verloren geglaubte Manuskript de Sades ausfindig gemacht und 1904 erstmalig in 200 Exemplaren veröffentlicht. Diese - außerordentlich rare - Ausgabe ist allerdings sehr fehlerhaft. Erst die akribische Arbeit des berühmten Sade-Forschers Maurice Heine führte zu dieser ersten zuverlässigen Ausgabe. Eine fotografische Abbildung in Bd. 1 zeigt ein Bild des Original-Manuskripts. Sade schrieb den Text in Miniaturschrift auf eine Rolle, um den Text besser vor den Aufsehern in der Bastille verstecken zu können. Au début du sciècle, le berlinois Iwan Bloch a trouvé le manuscrit de Sade lequel on crût disparu. Il l'a publie en 1904 en 200 exemplaires. Mais cette édition, très rare, porte beaucoup de fautes. C'est seulement cette édition de Heine, établie avec le plus grand soin et portant de notes critiques, qui a méné à la première publication fiable des 120 Journées. The text of this edition was edited by Maurice Heine, one of the most acknowledged Sade-researcher. And this edition is the first complete and exact edition of Sade's famous novel. The text of the '120 days of Sodom' was first published in 1904 by the German sexologist Iwan Bloch, who has found the manuscript. But his edition is very imperfect. Wrappers slightly rubbed, vol. 2 foxed at upper margin, capital with marginal glazes, vol. 1 and 3 with missing parts. Binding partly somewhat loosened, otherwise good untrimmed copy inside. First Edition. (Paris: Club des Bibliophiles 1904). This is the extremely rare first edition of the masterpiece of the infamous libertine the Marquis de Sade. The original wrappers bound-in. Contemporary pink buckram (with some light damp-staining). # 106 of a Limited Edition of only 200 copies. De Sade's tale has been called: "the most impure tale that has ever been written since the world exists." Donatien Alphonse François, Marquis de Russell (1740-1814) wrote his 120 Journees de Sodome in 1785 while imprisoned in the Bastille. The manuscript was assumed lost during the storming of the Bastille in 1789, but it was subsequently found hidden and fully preserved in de Sade's cell in the Bastille. At the end of the nineteenth century the manuscript was acquired by Sade's first biographer, a German psychiatrist named Iwan Bloch, who had it privately printed in this edition in 1904. The original manuscript is preserved at the Bodmer Library in Geneva. Rare.

Format des feuilles : 16,2 x 12,2 cm. Gravure : 11 x 8 cm. Papier vélin. Tirage a petit nombre (indéterminé). Nous n'avons pu déterminé à quelle édition ces estampes se rapportaient. Elles sont toutes sur le thème de la torture et du vice sadien, les scènes de débauche se succèdent, mises en valeur par un coloris très finement exécuté au pinceau. SUPERBE ÉTAT. TRÈS RARE.

Believed lost, it was unpublished until 1904, when the manuscript was rediscovered. In it, four wealthy frenchmen seal themselves inside a castle with 20 victims, 12 accomplices, and 10 servants, immersing themselves in every kind of sexual deviance including coprophilia, necrophilia, bestiality, incest and rape. Written on a single scroll over a period of 37 days while the author was imprisoned in Bastille, it was unsurprisingly banned throughout Europe until the 1960s, and even then the Olympia Press translation was forbidden in almost all English-speaking countries.
