Einband leicht berieben. - Spanning the years 1914 to 1930, the present exhibition traces the evolution of Conrad Felixmüller's art from aesthetic and political rebellion to the expression of a broad and solid humanitarianism in the days of the Weimar Republic. Maturing during the First World War and its aftermath, Conrad Felixmüller worked through the crisis and chaos of this period to a positive, regenerative art that, for all its awareness of the current of German Expressionism, remains a personal and independent achievement. Gutes Ex. - Englisch. // Text von Titus Felixmüller. - Spanning the years 1914 to 1930, the present exhibition traces the evolution of Conrad Felixmüller's art from aesthetic and political rebellion to the expression of a broad and solid humanitarianism in the days of the Weimar Republic. Maturing during the First World War and its aftermath, Conrad Felixmuller worked through the crisis and chaos of this period to a positive, regenerative art that, for all its awareness of the current of German Expressionism, remains a personal and independent achievement. The exhibition draws upon the resources of two private collections, the Dr. Ernst and Anne Fischer Collection, since January 1979 on extended loan to the University of Virginia Art Museum, and the Steven Schuyler Collection of Cambridge, Massachusetts. The parents of Dr. Ernst Fischer, Rosi and Ludwig Fischer of Frankfurt, Germany, were prominent among the early and loyal patrons of German and Austrian Expressionism, and Fe-lixmuller's prints and drawings-including an etched portrait of Ludwig Fischer-formed an important segment of their collection. The University of Virginia Art Museum is fortunate to be able to mount the Felixmuller show as a second selection from the Fischer Collection, following the Die Brucke exhibition in the Fall of 1978, and to incorporate into it thirteen prints owned by Steven Schuyler, a teaching fellow at Harvard University. Steven Schuyler befriended Conrad Felixmuller and his wife in the Seventies in Berlin while studying on a Fulbright scholarship. We owe him our gratitude for the gracious loan of his prints and the major essay on Felixmuller in this catalogue. Titus Felixmuller, architect in Hamburg, Germany, and the artist's younger son, agreed to be the patron for this show, giving moral and substantial financial support. He also allowed us to translate his essay "The Father as Painter-His Son as Model" from the Dortmund Felixmuller exhibition in 1 978. The sponsors of the University of Virginia Art Museum Felixmuller exhibition are the Goethe Institutes of North America under the guidance of Dr. Christoph Wecker, director of the Goethe House, New York. It is entirely due to their combined financial effort for coverage of the transportation and insurance costs as well as the printing of this catalogue that the Conrad Felixmüller exhibition will travel to seven major cities in the United States and Canada (Angelika Schmiegelow Powell) Sprache: Deutsch Gewicht in Gramm: 550 (Ausstellung).
