Ajouter au panierHardcover. Etat : Fair / Good. 1st Edition. First edition. Hardback, bound in the original cloth with printed titling to spine and upper board. 22 × 14cm, 315pp + index. Signed and dedicated by Brian Stuart (as Brian A Stuart) to the ffep, "Sarah Davies from Brian A Stuart, August 1939". This is Brian Stuart's first book and is an account of his joining the French Foreign Legion where he was (apparently) the first Englishman to be given a commission having been a Lieutenant in the 4th London Regiment, and then after having left on account of bad eyesight, his trek through French Africa, over the Sahara, where the incidents include him drinking from a cup that had been used by General Gordon, and Amy Johnson swooping down in her plane on her return journey from Cape Town (1932). The book is illustrated with a frontispiece portrait, map endpapers and six pages of photographs. Brian Arthur Lewis Stuart (1902-1981) went on to become a successful thriller writer, publishing under his real name, and as Peter Meredith and Francis Martin. His thriller were well received but some of them were finished and published whilst he was serving time in jail for obtaining money and goods by false pretenses. Condition: A fair copy but in strong readable condition. The cloth is rubbed to all edges, and the pages have light foxing throughout. The binding is a little weak in places but no text pages are loose. All illustrations are present and one sheet is starting to work loose. Signed by Author(s).
