Original pictorial brown cloth with gilt anchor on front cover with the map and all the engravings, and early map of Africa and much on the African Slave. This was a northern probe and fact finding tour of Africa for the Northern states of America and supported the cause for the Abolition of Slavery. this is the American Navy on the side of the British in their desire to eradicate slavery off the face of the earth. Slavery that arcane institution based in the remote era of barbarisms has no place in a modern world would have been fine copy except for old damp stains in text.

Good+ condition as a whole. The original cloth on the spine is tanned and has a small hole torn in the middle. Light, spotty stains on original cloth boards, most visibly on the back. Pencil notes and previous seller's description on front and back endpapers. Heavy foxing throughout and spotty dampstaining along top edges. Otherwise, text easily readable and binding tight. Inscribed by the author on the front endpaper, facing the bookplate of the man to whom the book is inscribed. Andrew H. Foote (1806-1863) was a U.S. naval officer during the Civil War. This is the first edition of his book about the slave trade and American colonial activity in Africa. Complete with 8 tinted plates.
