Top edge slightly sunned, but otherwise a very good copy. Signature on first free endpaper. Illustrated by 9 maps, including 8 on chapter heading titles. The crisis in the Congo, following the granting of independence in July 1960, the abrupt Belgian withdrawal, and the subsequent advent of UN agencies. Chapters are devoted to surveys of the six provinces. Ritchie Calder (1906-82) was a Scottish journalist, author, socialist, internationalist and peace activist.
