In Chicago kommt es zu einer spontanen Aktion: Als er zufällig am Biograph-Kino vorbeikommt, erinnert sich Beuys an Leben und Sterben des amerikanischen Gangsters John Dillinger und spielt Flucht und Erschießung nach. Anschließend führt die Reise nach Minneapolis, wo Beuys weitere Lectures hielt, Pressekonferenzen gab und ausgedehnte Spaziergänge im Kaufhaus Dayton's unternahm.Hunderte von Fotos, Einzelbilder und Serien entstanden auf dieser Reise. Unmittelbar nachdem Beuys nach Deutschland zurückgekehrt war, wurde das Material für ein Buch ausgewertet. Die Verwirklichung des Projektes verschob sich jedoch immer wieder.
