Ajouter au panierSoft cover. Etat : Fine. 1st Edition. Gregory Corso is sometimes described as the youngest of the Beat Generation and was well known by all the major participants. His upbringing as a foundling, sleeping rough on the streets of Little Italy and doing time for petty theft made him all too familiar with the real hardships of a beat life. He doesn't appear to have lost the habit of stealing, especially books, even from friends and supporters, to fund his hand to mouth existence. The fact that so many people put up with this suggests that he must have had considerable charm and he also produced a wide range of poetry and written work. This was his only novel issued by Olympia Press in 1961. This copy is in excellent condition with its photographic dust wrapper.

Ajouter au panierFirst edition, first printing, inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper in the month of publication, "hello, Gregory Corso, april 28 1961". This copy, which retains the uncommon dust jacket, is in Kearney's first state, with no overprice sticker on either the wrapper or jacket. The American Express was Corso's only novel, a wild, careening tale of a child born in the basement of an American Express branch, inspired by Corso's days in Europe anxiously waiting to cash royalty checks and advances. G. S. Fraser wrote that "full surrender" to Corso "would leave you flat on your back waiting for elephants to trample you" (rear flap). Kearney 160. Small octavo. Border of title page printed in green, black and white illustrations by the author throughout. Original green wrappers, lettered in black, spine and front cover with decorative borders in black and white. With photographic card dust jacket printed in black, white, and orange. Nick at head of spine, trivial crease at foot of rear wrapper; jacket not price-clipped, trivial creasing and rubbing to spine ends, crease at foot of rear panel: a near-fine copy in like jacket.
