The essence of this hitherto ill-recognized syndrome, which the author calls Narcissistic Personality Disturbance, is a defect in the person's sense of inner cohesion and continuity: an insufficient consolidation of the Self. This book defines the substance of the psychological illness from which these patients suffer and an important normal phase of personality development which is correlated to it. It also shows that the understanding of this condition opens the door to the successful, rational treatment of frequently encountered psychological disturbances which were formerly thought to be inaccessible to insight-providing psychotherapy. -- These patients establish a specific relationship to the psychoanalyst.
