The Battle of Buena Vista, fought over February 22 and 23, 1847, saw the outmanned American Army, under Zachary Taylor, defeat the Mexicans under General Antonio Lpez de Santa Anna. The American forces were largely made up of volunteers rather than regular armyArchive. 15 pieces. 1847 (mostly April). Buena Vista [Mexico]. An archive of fourteen receipts and manuscripts written in the wake of the Battle of Buena Vista; most are from April 1847 and a few state that the location of the receipts is Buena Vista. Some of these receipts are addressed to Charles C. Gilbert of Ohio, and it is for volunteers from Indiana and Ohio. Some are in pencil and some are in pen. These documents show the American soldiers, stuck in rural Mexico, trying to find food for themselves and their beasts of burden. Mexican War dated manuscripts written from Mexico are scarce.
