L'auteur développe le sujet de sa thèse, soutenue en 1873, sur l'arsenal du diagnostic médical ; cet ouvrage est presque deux fois plus volumineux et avec un plus grand nombre de gravures que la thèse. Jeannel a voulu combler une lacune. Cet ouvrage est précieux pour connaître le matériel médical de cette époque. Il complète le volumineux ouvrage de Gaujot et Spillmann qui, lui, porte sur " l'Arsenal de la chirurgie" (1867-1872). Jeannel étudie les procédés d'exploration de l'état général, des organes respiratoires, de l'appareil cardio-vasculaire, du système nerveux, du système musculaire et locomoteur, de l'appareil digestif et des organes génitaux de la femme ; les deux derniers chapitres concernent l'examen des urines et le laryngoscope. Il existe des références bibliographiques en bas de page, une table alphabétique des auteurs et une table des matières. Maurice Jeannel (1850-1918), originaire de Bordeaux, fut médecin militaire puis devint professeur de clinique chirurgicale à l'Ecole de médecine de Toulouse, et doyen de cette école. Il fut élu correspondant de l'Académie de médecine.
