When reading the Text, accompanying each illustration, be sure to observe that many notations on the sketch. to conserve space, we try to get as much instructional information on each page as possible. The shading (and stipplin) on the sketches indicate the grain and flesh sides of the leather. Establish this in your mind so that when viewing the sketches, you can tell at a glance which is the grain side, or flesh side of the leather. See photos for more information.

There are so many different styles and types of leather cases that we cannot get them all within the covers of one and two. Therefore, we have to devote future volumes on this subject to cover such items. Volume two features the construction of a wide variety of handles and their uses and application. Welted construction is also featured. where the case is assembled inside out, sewn. then reserved. This makes a very strong and attractive seam. We also show that many facets of zipper uses and how to make and install them. We endeavour to instruct you on how to design your own cases for specific items. it is, of course, impossible to give a pattern for every type of case that is made. But with many instructions and assembly techniques presented with these pages, they can be adapted to conform to your own special projects. New Carving Design Patterns are not given in this book as space was not available. We have used existing patterns from other publication to illustrate how they can be applied.
