Hardcover. Etat : Very Good. 1st Edition. lii, 268 pp; 3 portraits (frontispiece, at p. xxv, at p. xlvii); 1 plate at p. 243 (see photo); label pasted to p. 242 of Lorenz Reinhard, 711 Broadway, New York, sole agent in America for Baunscheidt s Lebenswecker--Life Restorer--oil, and books of Baunscheidt (see photo). Later cloth. Plate lightly foxed. Very Good. First Edition in English, translated from the sixth German edition, Der Baunscheidtismus vom Erfinder dieser neuen Heillehre Carl Baunscheidt, published in Bonn by Wittmann in 1858. A Life of Charles Baunscheidt written by a friend is on pp. xxv-xlvi. An Annotated Catalogue of the Edward C. Atwater Collection of American Popular Medicine and Health Reform no. 237. "In this treatise Baunscheidt outlines his peculiar theories of life and disease, the importance of applying therapeutic processes to the surface of the skin (rather than poisoning the internal organs with medicines), the practical application of the Lebenswecker and Oleum Baunscheidtii, and the 'abducent' principle on which this therapy rests. The Lebenswecker consisted of needles released by a spring mechanism in the handle that punctured the skin to a depth determined by the operator. Baunscheidt stresses that the instrument is of limited effectiveness without the oil, which is responsible for the exanthematic irritation that 'tends to remove quickly, and efficaciously, all infectious diseases'. A wood engraving of the Lebenswecker is printed on page 75 (see photo)" (annotation to Atwater no. 236, a German edition published in Cleveland OH in 1865). You can read online an excellent publication about Baunscheidt by Dirk Spennemann, entitled "A Baunscheidt Homeopathic Medicine Kit in the Jindera Pioneer Museum". The first English translation, published in Bonn, that is being offered here should not be confused with a "First American Edition" published in Buffalo, New York, in 1862. That edition has both less and more material than the edition offered here. The English translation is the same where they have the same material. The 1862 "First American Edition" does not have the "Life of Charles Baunscheidt written by a friend" that is in the edition offered here (on pp. xxv-xlvi). The 1862 "First American Edition" also does not have translations of the Prefaces to the fourth and fifth German editions, which are on pp. xii-xxi in the edition offered here. There are many more differences as well. In 1865 a new English translation, from the eight German edition, was published in Cleveland OH. OCLC (WorldCat) locates copies in 8 US libraries: Johns Hopkins, National Library of Medicine, College of Physicians of Philadelphia, Rochester, Stanford, Washington University St. Louis, Wisconsin, Yale.
