Beinahe alle erhaltenen Handschriften sind reich illustriert. Anhand der Handschrift aus der Real Biblioteca del Monasterio de San Lorenzo de El Escorial, dem sogenannten Escorial Beatus, geht der Autor der Frage nach dem Zusammenhang zwischen Text und Bild nach und der Benutzung und dem Verständnis des Bandes durch die lesenden Mönche. Erzählung, Bild, Auslegung anhand dieses dreigliedrigen Schemas hat Beatus seinen Kommentar aufgebaut: Auf einen Abschnitt der Johannesapokalypse folgt eine Illustration, an die sich die Erläuterungen anschließen. Obwohl der Kommentar darauf angelegt ist, durchblättert, angeschaut und gelesen zu werden, wurden Text und Bild bisher eher getrennt betrachtet. Theologiegeschichte und Philologie beschäftigten sich mit dem Kommentartext, Kunstgeschichte bzw. Bildwissenschaften mit den Illustrationen. In dieser Untersuchung werden beide Dimensionen synoptisch betrachtet. In der Zusammenschau zeigt sich, dass im Kommentar nicht allein der Text der Johannesapokalypse illustriert wird, sondern dass sich einige Bilder auf die Auslegung beziehen und auf diese Weise den Bibeltext und die Deutung verschränken. MS M.644 Morgan Library and Museum (New York, USA) This wonderful beatus was made Ca. 940-945 in Tábara by Maius, who worked both as scribe and illuminator, under a commission by Abbot Victor of the San Miguel de Escalada Abbey. In its 606 pages divided in two volumes, measuring 385×285 mm (15x11 inches), we see the masterful hand of Maius delivering some of the most astonishing miniatures (+130 in full-page or double-page format) in Mozarabic art in transition to Romanesque art. This manuscripts was dealed by several unscrupulous dealers, like Guillermo Libri, until it end up at the Morgan Library in New York on 3 June 1919, where it is currently housed with signature MS M.644. Accompanying commentary volume is in English and Spanish. Get now this facsimile edition in great condition at just $4,999 in opposition to the retail price of +$12,800.

It was made during the 11th century and is one of the most profusely illuminated beatuses with nearly 120 illuminations and +1,400 decorated initials in its nearly 600 pages measuring 368 × 287 mm (15.5 x 11.3). The manuscript was commissioned by Grégoire de Montane, Abbot of the Benedictine monastery of Saint-Sever, in which scriptorium the codex was finished c. 1038 by its master, Stephanus Gaudus, with the aid of the resident scribes and illuminators. Currently, the manuscript is housed in the Bibliothèque nationale de France in Paris, under signature Ms. Lat. 8878.
