This volume (& accompanying exhibition) represents, first and foremost, the Fowler Museum @ UCLA's continuing engagement with the growing body of work by filmmaker/photographer Larry Yust. Building on an earlier exhibiiton, the current project widens the lens to capture the walls and streets not just of Southern California but also of Paris and Berlin. At the same time, however, its focus is narrowed in order to concentrate on very specific elements of urban visual culture, namely graffiti murals, and other forms of largely unauthorized marking. Yust's elevations of what we refer to collectively as 'street art' address a topic that is both sensational and sensitive, towards provoking meaningful conversations about a 'genre' that, while very much on our minds today, has its origins in antiquity.
