Small 8vo in fours, pp. 15; disbound. One of four Dublin reprints of a poem which was first printed in London earlier the same year. This is a reply to a recent poem by James Miller that had caused a sensation. Are these things so? was a challenge to Sir Robert Walpole and his ministry, issued as if it had been written by Pope. In this affirmative response the poet ends with the suggestion that Walpole save the nation by committing suicide, using a dagger, or hemlock; several other poems immediately appeared in reply, defending the government. The author Robert Morris (1703-1754) was born and raised in Twickenham; Pope, unsurprisingly, was his literary model. He was a professional surveyor and builder, who wrote many works on contemporary architecture. 'His writings are now seen to form the most substantial and coherent contemporary commentary on British architecture in the first half of the eighteenth century' (ODNB. Foxon M515.
