Welch Medical Library of The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine October 17, 1929." "Cushing was obliged to attend the dedication ceremonies of the Welch Library. His address was evidently written under some pressure, and it does not rank with his other utterances prepared for ceremonial occasions. It had been started on shipboard, and H.C. was heard to remark that it was second-class, like the accommodations in which it was begun. It carried the somewhat unfortunate title, 'The Binding Influence of a Library on a Subdividing Profession.' Medical students, being what they are, were soon off in the corridors whispering among themselves about the evils of bibliographical constipation" (Fulton, Harvey Cushing, pp. 583-84). There are four versions of this address. It appeared in three journals: Science; Johns Hopkins Hospital Bulletin; and Johns Hopkins Nurses Alumnae Magazine. In addition it appeared in the format offered here, which is a more elegantly printed version.
