Ajouter au panierPaperback. Etat : new. Paperback. Blood on the Moon (1931) is Tully's fifth and final book in what he called his Underworld Edition-a series of autobiographical books focusing on different aspects of his childhood and youth. As the concluding book in the series, Tully looks back at subjects from the previous four Underworld books. There are hobo stories that would have fit well in Beggars of Life, there are Hughie Tully's stories that could have come from Shanty Irish, the Great Slavinsky would have been at home in Circus Parade, and there are grifters who could have plied their trade in Shadows of Men. There's also the brutal description of the 1906 World Lightweight title fight between Joe Gans and Battling Nelson. The fight went an incredible 42 rounds in 100 degree heat and Tully's description is as tough and vicious as anything that would later appear in Tully's classic boxing novel, The Bruiser. And in the chapter "Ladies in the Parlor," Tully describes the women who work in a brothel with sympathy but without romanticizing them. Ajouter au panierHardcover. Etat : Poor. No Jacket. This book's been around. Full cloth binding. Apparently a later printing. Inscribed and SIGNED by author: "To Dick eitner from his friend Jim Tully June 6, 1931 K. C. Mo a pleasant journey on the Santa Fe." The first letter on the second name, probably an L, was obliterated by a bullet fired through the book, I would judge a .22 caliber. It was one of two shots that hit the book. One hit the front cover about a third of the distance from the top edge, near the horizontal center point, and traveled at a radical angle to the left, exiting at the spine in the rear. This is the one that damaged the name in the inscription. The second bullet entered the fore-edge at about page 51 and, traveling at an angle that parallels that of the first, exited the rear cover 3 inches down from the top edge and 2 1/2 inches from the fore-edge. As is usual, the bullets left more of a mess where they exited than where they entered. Naturally, this kind of thing had a negative effect on the text, although the second bullet didn't cause significant damage to the print until page 196. In addition, the spine is faded and soiled and there is a general layer of soiling. Does the inscription indicate that Tully was on his way on the Santa Fe railroad to Hollywood? Perhaps. Despite having been shot twice, once through the heart and spine and once through the ribs, the book holds together well. To top it off, the cloth is worn through at the two bottom corners and just a trifle at the bottom edge of the spine. One wonders about the cause of the shooting.

Ajouter au panierHardcover. Etat : Very Good+. Etat de la jaquette : Very Good dj. Illustrated by (dj) Glenn Cravath (illustrateur). First Edition. [a good sound attractive copy with only light shelfwear, slight uneven fading to cloth; the jacket is lightly soiled, with some wear and a number of tiny chips at spine ends, spine panel slightly faded and browned, a bit of wear to upper right corner of front panel]. INSCRIBED and SIGNED by the author on the ffep: "To Fred Leonard / My old friend - / and one after my / own heart - - - / with appreciation / Jim Tully / 1931 / Hollywood, Calif." The final installment in what Tully considered his five-volume autobiographical cycle (following "Beggars of Life," "Circus Parade," "Shanty Irish" and "Shadows of Men"), this book essentially picked up where "Shanty Irish" had left off, following the passage of young Jim from a Cincinnati orphanage through his time on the road (and in the boxing ring), to the moment when he resolves to "write or starve." Tully himself stated of the book, in the jacket blurb: "With it, I bid farewell forever, I hope, to that life, the winds of which equally twisted and strengthened me for the sadder years ahead." The title was derived from a phrase used by his grandfather, "Old Hughie," to signify "trouble to sailors and the Irish." Signed by Author.
