Original book sculpture carved into a 1962 Social Register, featuring a figure made of found materials wearing a Sunday hat and perusing society literature from within it. Bruno Pasquier-Desvignes defies classification. THE NEW YORK TIMES calls him "part tinkerer and part storyteller, a cross between Alexander Calder and Jean Tinguely;" filmmaker James Ivory compares him to Picasso, noting his ability to "pick up any old thing lying around, see its possibilities for transformation and then turn it into a new and enchanting thing" (RURAL INTELLIGENCE). Pasquier-Desvignes's book sculptures highlight his ingenuity, creativity, and humor, as he toys with the idea of a codex as a container. 6.75'' x 4.75''. Original black boards. 8 pages, then bookblock fused with glue, with rectangular recess cut into center. Figure made of cork, foil, pipe cleaner, and other found materials mounted to inside of recess, mirror mounted to rear of recess. Binding with light bumping to corners and spine ends. Leaves with mild toning and wear to edges, a couple tiny closed tears. Two or three tiny spots of foxing around recess. Solid.
