Original full-calf binding with boards held by one cord and showing some rubbing and wear. The long-title continues 'Containing Descriptions of the Parts of Plants; an Explanation of the scientific Terms used by Morrison, Ray, Tournefort, Linnaeus, and other eminent Botanists; a brief Analysis of the principal Systems in Botany; a critical Enquiry into the Merits and Defects of the Linnean Method of Arrangement, and Distribution of the Genera'.

Hardcover. Etat : Fair. Light wear along bottom and fore-edges of boards. Small, closed tear on back edge of spine, at tail. Title plate on spine is chipped. Hinge cracked at front paste down page. Brown staining along hinge of first free end page. Previous owner's name has been stamped on first and second free end pages. Light chipping along fore-edge of frontispiece page, and several closed tears near hinge. Small chip at tail of hinge, starting at frontispiece page through the first pullout page. Page starting with "The Roots are branched and fibrous" is lightly creased at one corner along hinge, and is cracked along hinge. Page grouping of pp. starting with "roundish, and placed within the flower" through "segments or divisions" remains attached by three threads, one of the pages within this grouping is loose but present. Several page groupings are detached but present, binding is very fragile. Brown stain along hinge at last free end page. Back paste down page is now transparent. Overall in fair condition.

A very minor amount of spotting and very light off-setting o/w. contents fine. Contemporary full calf binding with gilt lettering and decoration to spine just lightly rubbed and very gently sunned to spine o/w. in fine condition. A very pleasing copy of the final, (revised, corrected and significantly enlarged) edition of this detailed work. Colin Milne (1744?-1815) was a native of Aberdeen. This 'the third edition of Milne's 'Botanical Dictionary' (1805) is illustrated with twenty-five engravings by Francis Sansom after drawings by Sydenham Edwards.' (Blanche Henrey). Edwards (1768-1819) was born in Brynbuga (Usk), Wales. 'In 1779, Mr Denman, a friend of the botanist and author of 'Flora Londinensis', William Curtis (1746-1799), happened to be passing through Abergavenny. There, he met the youth Sydenham Edwards and was so impressed by his copies of plates from the Flora that he showed them to Curtis who promptly arranged that Edwards move to London where he was instructed in botanical illustration and set to work firstly on Flora Londinensis and later the 'Botanical Magazine or Flower Garden Displayed', along with James Sowerby (1757-1822) and William Kilburn (1745-1818) (Orchid Study Group).

pp. [viii, 682]. 3 folding tables, 25 plates engraved by F. SANSOM, after drawings by SYDENHAM EDWARDS. The text is not paginated. Contemporary calf, spine panelled in gilt, rebacked with the original spine relaid, original marbled end-papers and edges of the book-block, slight foxing of the last few plates, overall a very good copy. *VERY SCARCE, COPAC no copy recorded, but 2 locations on WORLD CAT., the Natural History Museum and Bangor. First printed in 1770, a second edition in 1778.
