Hardback. Etat : Good. A noted neurologist challenges the widespread misunderstanding of brain disease and mental illness. How the Brain Lost Its Mind tells the rich and compelling story of two confounding ailments, syphilis and hysteria, and the extraordinary efforts to confront their effects on mental life. How does the mind work? Where does madness lie, in the brain or in the mind? How should it be treated? Throughout the nineteenth century, syphilis--a disease of mad poets, musicians, and artists--swept through the highest and lowest rungs of European society like a plague. Known as the Great Imitator, it could produce almost any form of mental or physical illness, and it would bring down a host of famous and infamous characters--among them Guy de Maupassant, Vincent van Gogh, the Marquis de Sade, Friedrich Nietzsche, and Al Capone. It was the first truly psychiatric disease and it filled asylums to overflowing. At the same time, an outbreak of bizarre behaviors resembling epilepsy, but with no identifiable source in the body, strained the diagnostic skills of the great neurologists. It was referred to as hysteria. For more than a century, neurosyphilis stood out as the archetype of a brain-based mental illness, fully understood but largely forgotten, and today far from gone. Hysteria, under many different names, remains unexplained and epidemic. These two conditions stand at opposite poles of the current debate over the role of the brain in mental illness. Hysteria led Freud to insert sex into psychology. Neurosyphilis led to the proliferation of mental institutions. The problem of managing the inmates led to the abuse of lobotomy and electroshock therapy, and ultimately the overuse of psychotropic drugs. Today we know that syphilitic madness was a destructive disease of the brain while hysteria and, more broadly, many varieties of mental illness reside solely in the mind. Or do they? Afflictions once written off as hysterical continue to elude explanation. Addiction, alcoholism, autism, ADHD, Tourette syndrome, depression, and sociopathy, though regarded as brain-based, have not been proven to be so. In these pages, the authors raise a host of philosophical and practical questions. What is the difference between a sick mind and a sick brain? If we understood everything about the brain, would we understand ourselves? By delving into an overlooked history, this book shows how neuroscience and brain scans alone cannot account for a robust mental life, or a deeply disturbed one.…

Paperback. Etat : Good. This is a self-help book centered on a nonscientific approach to the various roles the mind and the brain play in our lives. The basis for the approach is the authors' research and experience working with patients related to stress management. It is a common-sense text that deals with stress and mindfulness and offers a new way of looking at how we live our lives. In between each chapter, suggestions are included on how to be more present in the moment, more mindful, which are designed to supplement the chapter material.…

Paperback. Etat : Very Good. When the first edition of Teaching with the Brain in Mind was published in 1998, it quickly became an ASCD best-seller, and it has gone on to inspire thousands of educators to apply brain research in their classroom teaching. Now, author Eric Jensen is back with a completely revised and updated edition of his classic work, featuring new research and practical strategies to enhance student comprehension and improve student achievement. In easy to understand, engaging language, Jensen provides a basic orientation to the brain and its various systems and explains how they affect learning. After discussing what parents and educators can do to get children's brains in good shape for school, Jensen goes on to explore topics such as motivation, critical thinking skills, optimal educational environments, emotions, and memory. He offers fascinating insights on a number of specific issues, including: How to tap into the brain's natural reward system. The value of feedback. The importance of prior knowledge and mental models. The vital link between movement and cognition. Why stress impedes learning. How social interaction affects the brain. How to boost students' ability to encode, maintain, and retrieve learning. Ways to connect brain research to curriculum, assessment, and staff development. Jensen's repeated message to educators is simple: You have far more influence on students' brains than you realize . . . and you have an obligation to take advantage of the incredible revelations that science is providing. The revised and updated edition of Teaching with the Brain in Mind helps you do just that.…

Paperback. Etat : Very Good. The words are on the tip of your tongue, but you just can't quite remember them. You've been there a hundred times, so why did you take the wrong turn? Outwardly, as people age they may be looking and feeling younger than their parents' generation--60 is the new 40, after all--but mental decline can begin as early as age 30, and it will impact everyone at some point. The increasing rate of dementia is sobering, and the personal, financial, and societal stakes are high. The good news is, just like diet and exercise can keep aging bodies healthier, the proper mental regimen can slow--even reverse--the deterioration of our mental capacity. In this practical and hopeful book, Dr. Frank Minirth gives readers trustworthy scientific insights, helpful assessments to measure mental sharpness, and proven strategies to preserve focus, memory, and brain power at every age. Paperback. Etat : Fair.
