His inscription reflected the "New South" in the early 20th century. HE wrote: To J. E. Hilt A man who is keeping ? the ideals of the South, from the grandson of the author. Light rubbing to the tips of the spine and a hint of rubbing to the corners, otherwise a near fine copy. The 4th Tennessee Cavalry, under the command of Col. Braxton Smith, was not organized until after Bragg's Kentucky campaign of 1862. Unknown to the regiment's founders, there was already another regiment with the same name: Col. Stearnes' 4th Tennessee Cavalry under Gen. Forrest. Guild served as the adjutant of the regiment and, at the end of the war in North Carolina, as adjutant of Thomas Harrison's brigade (then commanded by Col. Baxter Smith. CONTENTS DESCRIPTION: When the War between the States began, the author resigned his position as clerk and master of the Chancery Court at Gallatin, Tenn., and joined the Confederate army, being made adjutant of the 4th Tennessee Cavalry, commanded by his brother-in-law, Col. Baxter Smith. Then through four years, mostly under Gen. Joe Wheeler, that regiment was constantly in service. The final surrender of his regiment occurred at Charlotte, N. C, May 3, 1865. Clark Kirkillare (sic) Late of CSA, As a slight token of appreciation of his valorous service in the war of the states and his far greater service in marking the battlefield of Nashville by his friends too young to fight & too lazy to work.
