Paperback. Etat : Good. The /Xam Bushmen, hunters, gatherers, some poets among them, were a stone age people who survived nearly 5,000 years in the region now known as the Cape Province of South Africa. By the turn of this century they had completely disappeared, destroyed finally by the murderous European settlement of the interior. Song of the Broken String has its provenance in the oral tradition of this ancient culture. In the 1860s, a German linguist named W. H. Bleek become aware of the genocide in progress. Taking into his service three /Xam Bushmen he found working as convict laborers in a chain gang, he set about preserving a small part of their heritage. After devising a phonetic notation of the /Xam's language, he transcribed the personal narratives, songs, and folktales of these three men and translated them into English. Housed in an archive at the University of Cape Town, the 12,000 pages of the Bleek and Lloyd Collection are all that remains of this people and their language. Stephen Watson, a contemporary South African poet, has explored this archive, re-translating Bleek's word-for-word English prose into poems in which something of the power of those original voices lives on, however filtered through the 19th century ethnographer and the 20th century writer. The results not only offer a path into a powerful oral tradition, but also raise questions about the ways in which we listen to and translate cultures that are distant or lost. Song of the Broken String does not bring back the /Xam, it is not a collection of artifacts. Something survives here that is almost monumental, certainly beautiful. Stephen Watson, a contemporary South African poet and writer, has explored this archive, re-translating Bleek's word- for- word English prose into poems in which the power of these original voices would live on. However filtered through the 19th century ethnographer and the 20th century writer, poetry seemed the obvious form for this dialogue. The results not only offer a way into a powerful oral tradition but also raise questions about the ways in which we listen to and translate cultures that are distant or lost, cultures in whose fate we are somehow complicit. Song of the Broken String does not bring back the /Xam, but it makes their ghosts vital presences in our own literary tradition.…

Paperback. Etat : Very Good. Growing up in a fast, dysfunctional world was normal for Alex. Everywhere she went, she was subject to abuse. She would catch the public bus at the age of eight years old in the rough city streets of DC. In the 1980s, watching drunks and drug addicts crowd the bus stop was everyday life. Forced to become street smart after being a ward of the courts for eight years, Alex thought things could not get any worse. Not surprisingly, they did. After trusting someone that she thought had her best interests at heart, she soon finds herself married and pregnant at the age of fifteen, and now a domestic violence victim. Determined not to let her present dictate her future, she began to reach out to God, with writing as her key to all her misery. With faith and strong determination, she changed her life path from being an abused child sexually and physically. As you read this book, you will learn to allow the inner child in you to speak and brighten your path while you discover that until you release your past, you too are still a child within.…

Paperback. Etat : Good. With humble beginnings in a small, low-income home in Pittsburgh to over 40 years of business experience including serving as a Chairman, Vice-Chairman and member of several corporate boards of directors, being a corporate officer and running a $20 billion global operation for Johnson Controls, Inc., Automotive Operations, Worldwide, Rande Somma has seen some things in the context of leadership that deeply disturbed him. Somma brings an empathetic top-down perspective to the problem of corporate leadership and the chasm of disconnect that often exists between the workers, management, and the C-suite executives. His book looks at lowered standards for leaders, higher compensation, and the path of convenience, fraud, greed, and corruption that leaders are more often choosing over obligation to their duties. Recently, American businesses have been looking for and hiring leaders who are willing to do anything to elevate our companies to be successful, to be the best. The author contends that what is considered to be successful and the best has changed over the past several years or decades to refer almost exclusively to financial gain. While leaders we hire are supposed to be individuals talented in the art of leading people, they are now those guys and gals who are more talented at being financial wizards and creating the illusion that the business is fundamentally sound. This book is about what we have surrendered in the process of our hyper focus on financial gains, and that includes the exceptional return on investment of integrity. The author presents a narrative about what he perceives as a serious and disturbing truth that is incrementally infecting companies both large and small. This truth that was once unacceptable has now become not just acceptable but expected and normal with regard to leadership in corporate America. Somma demonstrates through his personal stories and others' experiences how corporate American leadership has descended into leadershit. While many of his stories are based on his own experience in the auto industry, Somma sees the problem as a more pervasive issue. It was not just the auto industry having a bad year or two; the pattern was repeated in other companies and industries and in other leadership situations. He recognized this as a leadership system that doesn't serve us anymore, and therefore, it is the system that is the problem. Somma shows how we - all of us - are paying for leadershit's lack of commitment to absolute integrity, authenticity, and real performance. While this book walks through Somma's own tangles with the facets of leadership over the course of his professional career with many organizations, he encourages the reader to recognize the challenges that we all face and for all of us to emerge with solutions and as authentic leaders.…

Paperback. Etat : Good. A native of Boliva, James Encinas twice crossed the United States--Los Angeles to New Jersey--on a bicycle. The first trip, during his mid-twenties, was done in hurt and fueled by anger. The second, at age 55, was done in the pursuit of healing himself and others. Having experienced domestic abuse, bullying and discrimination as a child, memories of trauma limited Encinas's freedom in significant ways. When he learned how Adverse Childhood Experiences (www.acestoohigh.com) impact adult health, his path towards healing began, and it widens daily. During the second cross country bike ride, Encinas collected stories of other experiencers of trauma and healing, dispensed information about human resilience and shared his deep belief in the power all people have to engage with and be enlightened by the process of healing. The book Wheeling to Healing.Broken Heart on a Bicycle: Understanding and Healing from Adverse Childhood Experiences takes readers to places where hurt originates and then into landscapes that offer larger views and inspire movement toward relief from trauma at a deep level. It educates people about the science of trauma, and encourages them to use a wide variety of methods that can open an individual and unique process of healing. James Encinas uses his life and experiences to care, inspire and promote relief from the effects of traumatic memories. When healing is embraced, life becomes more joyful.…

Paperback. Etat : Very Good. The truth is we've all experienced the brokenness of this world; broken dreams, hopes, and expectations. You lose your job. An unexpected circumstance catches you by surprise. Someone you love dies. A relationship fails. You do something you regret. What I want to remind you is that, regardless of your situation, you can find hope in an out of control world. There is hope, because God is picking up the pieces of our lives to make us whole again. There is hope, because he has a plan. While we will experience pain and loss, God will restore our joy and restore that which has been lost. That is a promise that is repeated over and over many times in the Scriptures. God will restore. He will pay back. What was lost will be found again. In fact, we will receive much more back than what we lost. There is a better future than what you are seeing and experiencing right now. Hardback. Etat : Good. Bestselling author William Bennett addresses the central social issue of our time--the deline of the family--in a book as intellectually provocative and politically controversial as his landmark The Death of Outrage. Our recent economic prosperity has masked the devastation of the American family, which is now under seige as never before. From the dramatic rise in illegitimacy, divorce, and single parenthood to the call for the recognition of gay marriages, the traditional nuclear family is being radically challenged and undermined, along with the moral and legal consensus that once supported it. Now in The Broken Hearth, William Bennett, America's foremost conservative spokesperson on matters of family values, presents a strong, well-reasoned, and informed defense of the traditional family. Interweaving history, anthropology, law, social science, and the teachings of Western religions, he argues that marriage between a man and a woman and the creation of a permanent, loving, and nurturing environment for children is a great historical achievement, one that should not be lightly abandoned in favor of more progressive arrangements. Bennett displays his ability to combine fearless conviction, acute insight, and respect for his adversaries in thorough, balanced, and enlightening discussions of single parenthood, cohabitation, gay marriage, and other trends that are undercuttingthe ideal of the family as the essential foundation of society. Looking closely at the concerns and questions that divide America, Bennett provides a powerful affirmation of family life and the values and benefits it bestows on individuals and on society as a whole. From the Hardcover edition.…
