Ajouter au panierHardcover. Etat : Very Good. 1st Edition. FIRST EDITION. Edges tanned with age, soft deckle fore-edge. A very faint 2" tideline to upper edge mildly affecting a small portion of page tops. Cocked spine. Corners bumped, worn to white. Mild rubbing to length of front spine, tiny tears to worn, folded under spine caps. Very faint cup ring to rear board. Mild shelfwear to front and rear boards. Hinges starting between a couple of signatures. Lightly rubbed, paste-on illustration of cowboy on bucking horse to front of navy cloth-covered boards, gilt debossed lettering to spine and front. Fifty black and white photographs. 242 pp. with tables and Tips to the Tenderfoot, 3 pp. advertisements to rear. Lightly shaken but still held together nicely. Charles Furlong's account of Eastern Oregon's famous Pendleton Round-Up, covering a 4 year period from 1913 to 1917. Furlong wanted to educate the "blase, effete, lily-livered youths" of America about the values of an "honorable physical contest"--the rodeo. "Roping, racing, and relays, by cowboys, Indians, and cowgirls ; steer roping, maverick races, steer bulldogging ; riding bucking horses, steers, bulls, buffaloes, and cows ; stagecoach racing, Indian ceremonial and war dances, trick riding, mounted tug of war, the grand parade, and that wonderful finale, the wild horse race.," (text).

Ajouter au panierHardcover. Etat : Very Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. VG/NO DJ, HB, 8vo., 242 pgs. A nice copy in clean & crisp blue cloth boards with bright gilt titles and with a B+W photo inset to the front board of a bucking bronco that has light rubbing and a few scratches that are not obtrusive. B+W frontispiece with tissue guard followed by 51 B+W photo plates throughout the text, lacking only the first plate facing pgs. 6+7 "Pendleton and Its Wheat Lands from the Air". It is almost certainly Furlong who has inscribed the front free endpaper in green fountain pen ink "Fer Annie Zucchini who rides 'em straight up and being a riding fool ain't never pulled leather" (an author inscribed copy but without his signature).

A book about rodeos, bronc riding, bull riding, cowboys, and the sports and culture of the Old West. In the back are also score tables for different rodeo competitions and a glossary of terms. Charles Wellington Furlong (1874-1967) was an American explorer, writer, artist, and photographer. Furlong traveled to many parts of the world throughout his career, but after a decline in his health, he went to the American West upon hearing that Theodore Roosevelt had done the same for his health earlier. A "Renaissance man" in his own right, Furlong is also credited on Page vii as having broken a world record for riding Sharkey the bull.
