Edward Eggleston [1837-1902] suffered ill health as a child and was primarily home-schooled by his father. In 1856 he was ordained as a Methodist minister. He wrote a number of stories, some of which attracted much attention, especially his "Hoosier " series. Among these are "The Hoosier Schoolmaster: A Story of Backwoods Life in Indiana", "The Hoosier Schoolboy", "The End of the World" and "The Faith Doctor". Eggleston's summer home, Owl's Nest in Lake George, New York, eventually became his year-round home and he died there at the age of 64. Owl's Nest was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1971.
